The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has launched a weekly public transport initiative in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, encouraging professionals working in the business district to avoid private cars every Friday and use public transport instead.
The initiative, called ‘BKC Weekly Public Transport Day’, has been launched by MMRDA in collaboration with WRI India.
It aims to promote sustainable mobility in one of India’s busiest business districts through greater use of Metro, suburban rail, buses and other public transport modes.
“Every Friday, BKC will choose public transport,” MMRDA said in a statement on X on 6 June.
Announcing the initiative, Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, called upon MMRDA employees to lead by example by observing Public Transport Day every Friday.
The authority said the move has been inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to increase the use of public transport.
“The initiative is built on the belief that the future of urban mobility will be shaped not just by infrastructure, but by the choices we make every day,” MMRDA said.
As India’s leading business district, BKC has the opportunity to lead this shift by creating a culture of smarter, more sustainable commuting, the authority said.
“What begins as a #NoCarDay every Friday has the potential to become a powerful movement for cleaner air, reduced congestion, lower emissions and more liveable cities,” the authority added.
