The Maharashtra government has initiated key steps to develop the Worli Jetty in Mumbai as a future water transport and emergency services hub, with the project expected to support passenger movement, medical response facilities and tourism connectivity along the city’s coast.
Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the proposed development of Worli Jetty would help strengthen water transport, emergency services and tourism in Mumbai, according to a statement issued by the Maharashtra government’s Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).
A detailed review of the Worli Jetty development plan was carried out at a meeting held at Mantralaya.
Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer Pradeep P. and officials from the concerned departments were present at the meeting.
Rane said temporary jetties had earlier been built near the Amarsons Garden Interchange area and the Worli Dairy area for transporting construction material during the work on the Mumbai Coastal Road project.
With the Coastal Road project moving towards completion, the state government is now considering using these jetties for water transport, emergency medical services, water ambulance operations and public transport services.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board had commissioned a structural audit from IIT Bombay to assess the suitability of the jetties.
According to the audit report, the Amarsons Jetty has been found unsuitable for passenger transport.
However, the report observed that the jetty near the Worli Dairy area could be used for water transport and medical emergency services after carrying out the required structural modifications.
The process to appoint a Project Management Consultant for the project has been completed.
The consultant will handle work related to the pre-feasibility report, detailed project report, environmental permissions and other technical approvals. The selection of the bidder is also in the final stage.
The state government has also invited Expressions of Interest from interested agencies for developing a helipad at Worli Jetty under the public-private partnership model.
“The state government is committed to making maritime transport in Mumbai more capable and modern. The development of Worli Jetty will not be limited only to transport, but will also be important from the point of view of increasing emergency services, tourism and connectivity in coastal areas,” Rane said.
Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said the civic administration would extend all necessary support to the Maharashtra Maritime Board for the development of Worli Jetty.
