The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a 41 Km long North-South corridor connecting Prahladpura to Todi Mod, with a total cost of ₹13,037.66 crore, according to an official release.

The project will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday, 8 April.

The Phase-2 corridor will comprise 36 stations and will provide connectivity to key urban and economic nodes including Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari and Vidhyadhar Nagar.

The project includes underground sections in the airport area and will be integrated with the existing Phase-1 corridor through planned interchanges and feeder systems, enabling a unified metro network across the city.

Jaipur Metro Phase-1, which spans 11.64 Km from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, currently records an average daily ridership of around 60,000 passengers.

With the commissioning of Phase-2, ridership is expected to increase significantly, improving the share of public transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

The project has undergone multiple levels of appraisal, including Inter-Ministerial Consultation, review by the Network Planning Group and evaluation by the Public Investment Board.

The Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) is above the threshold level of 14 per cent, indicating strong socio-economic viability, according to the ministry.

Funding for the project will be structured through equity contributions from the Centre and the Rajasthan government, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing, in accordance with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.

Targeted for completion by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions and enhance urban mobility for residents and visitors.

The ministry stated that the project aligns with the Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025, proposed Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) reforms and national sustainable urban transport objectives.
