The Department of Pharmaceuticals has invited proposals under the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI) to push domestic manufacturing, reduce import dependence and support innovation in India’s medical devices sector.
The scheme comes under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and is aimed at increasing the depth of value chains in the sector.
Applications have been invited from eligible entities under two key sub-schemes focused on manufacturing support and clinical study assistance.
The first sub-scheme is the Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence.
Under this, selected applicants can receive a one-time capital subsidy of up to ₹10 crore on a reimbursement basis.
The support will be available for manufacturing key components, raw materials, finished devices and accessories that can help reduce dependence on imports.
The second sub-scheme is the Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme.

Under this component, the department will provide financial support of up to ₹5 crore on a reimbursement basis to eligible applicants.
This support will cover clinical investigation, clinical performance evaluation, post-market follow-up studies and animal studies.
The measure is expected to help companies and institutions carry out the required studies needed for medical device development and regulatory readiness.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals said the initiative is part of efforts to promote domestic manufacturing and strengthen India’s medical device ecosystem.
The sector has been a key focus area as India works to build stronger local capacity in critical healthcare technologies and reduce reliance on imported devices and components.
Applications under the scheme have to be submitted through the online SMDI portal.
The last date for submitting proposals is July 23, 2026, by 6:00 PM.
