The housing initiatives are being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), which was launched in June 2015 with the objective of providing all-weather pucca houses with basic civic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries across the country.
Building on the experience of PMAY-U, the ministry launched PMAY-U 2.0 ‘Housing for All Mission’, with effect from 1 September 2024, targeting the construction, purchase and rental of affordable homes for an additional 1 crore beneficiaries over the next five years.
PMAY-U 2.0 is being implemented through four verticals – Beneficiary Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, Affordable Rental Housing, and the Interest Subsidy Scheme – allowing states flexibility in addressing diverse urban housing needs.
The ministry also highlighted that technology-driven and green construction practices are being promoted under the scheme through the Technology Sub-Mission and the Technology and Innovation Sub-Mission under PMAY-U 2.0, aimed at improving construction quality, speed, and sustainability of affordable housing projects across urban India.
