India currently has 1,180 transport and logistics infrastructure projects under implementation with a revised cost of ₹20,65,236 crore, according to the latest report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
The projects fall under the Transport and Logistics category of the Harmonized Master List (HML) of infrastructure sectors and include roads, railways, urban transport systems, aviation infrastructure, shipping, inland waterways and logistics infrastructure.
According to the report, the total original cost of these projects stands at ₹18,74,808 crore, which has since been revised to ₹20,65,236 crore. Expenditure on these projects has already reached ₹11,78,044 crore, representing about 57.04 per cent of the revised project cost.
During the month of January, one project in the transport and logistics category was commissioned while 175 new projects were added to the monitoring system, reflecting continued expansion of the infrastructure pipeline.
Roads and highways form the largest share of the transport infrastructure pipeline, with 863 projects currently under implementation. These projects have a combined original cost of ₹7,99,040 crore, which has been revised to ₹8,14,341 crore. Expenditure on road sector projects stands at ₹2,47,872 crore.
Railways account for the second largest component with 251 ongoing projects. The total original cost of these railway projects is ₹6,97,517 crore, revised to ₹8,50,971 crore, with cumulative expenditure reaching ₹7,00,909 crore.
Urban public transport projects number 28 with an original cost of ₹3,35,216 crore, revised to ₹3,55,797 crore. Expenditure on these projects stands at ₹2,05,666 crore.
Aviation and aviation infrastructure projects number 26, with an original cost of ₹21,601 crore, revised to ₹22,815 crore, while expenditure has reached ₹9,677 crore.
Shipping projects total nine with an original cost of ₹15,124 crore and revised cost of ₹15,291 crore. Expenditure on these projects stands at ₹9,339 crore.
The sector also includes two inland waterways projects with an original cost of ₹5,546 crore and revised cost of ₹5,258 crore, with expenditure of ₹4,150 crore.
In addition, one logistics infrastructure project with an original and revised cost of ₹763 crore has recorded expenditure of ₹430 crore.
Several large-scale infrastructure projects are being monitored under the ministry’s PAIMANA system within this category.
These include the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor project, the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project, and the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line project.
The PAIMANA monitoring system tracks central sector infrastructure projects costing ₹150 crore and above.
