Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Kaynes Semicon plant at Sanand, Ahmedabad, on 31 March, marking the start of commercial production at the facility and a key step in India’s semiconductor manufacturing push.

The plant, located in Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) area of Sanand, will manufacture advanced Intelligent Power Modules (IPMs), critical components used in automotive and industrial applications that require compact and efficient power switching systems.

Each module comprises 17 chips and will be supplied to California-based Alpha and Omega Semiconductor.

Once fully operational across all phases, the facility is designed to achieve a production capacity of 6.33 million units per day, positioning it as a significant contributor to India’s semiconductor output.

The Sanand unit will be the second semiconductor facility in India, after Micron Technology’s plant, to commence commercial production under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

The Micron facility in Sanand was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 February.

The Kaynes project marks the entry of an Indian-origin Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) company into semiconductor manufacturing, expanding domestic capabilities in a sector historically dominated by global players.

The facility operates as an OSAT/ATMP unit, focusing on semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging.

Its commissioning is expected to address a critical gap in India’s chip ecosystem by strengthening indigenous semiconductor packaging capacity.

The project is part of India’s broader push towards self-reliance in high-technology manufacturing and the development of a domestic semiconductor value chain.
