India has successfully achieved 1 billion tonne (BT) coal production on 20 March 2026, marking the second consecutive year that the country has reached this milestone.
The Ministry of Coal stated that the achievement has been made possible through “sustained and coordinated efforts across the coal sector and the invaluable contribution of all stakeholders.”
The ministry noted that the milestone underscores India’s growing self-reliance in the energy sector and its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to key industries.
According to the ministry, the enhanced and sustained coal production level has enabled the country to effectively meet rising energy demand, while also supporting the power sector in maintaining record-high coal stock levels at coal-based thermal power plants.
The ministry further stated that the achievement reflects “robust planning, efficient execution, and strengthened coordination across the coal value chain,” contributing meaningfully to the nation’s economic growth trajectory.
It added that the Ministry of Coal remains committed to fostering “a stable, transparent, and performance-driven ecosystem” through proactive policy interventions, rigorous performance monitoring, and close engagement with stakeholders to ensure reliable coal availability and seamless operations across sectors.
The ministry also highlighted that these efforts are aligned with the national vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047,” aimed at building a resilient energy framework, enhancing domestic production capabilities, and driving sustainable economic development.
