The Centre has approved 2.88 lakh additional houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 PMAY-U 2.0, taking the total number of sanctioned homes under the revamped scheme to over 13.61 lakh.
The fresh approvals were cleared at the 6th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in New Delhi on Monday, 23 February.
The newly sanctioned houses span 16 States and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Of the total 2.88 lakh houses approved in this round, 1.66 lakh fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction vertical, 1.09 lakh under Affordable Housing in Partnership, and 12,846 units under the Affordable Rental Housing component.
The affordable rental housing segment has been positioned as a key pillar of PMAY-U 2.0 to cater to urban migrants, industrial workers, construction labourers and working women.
In the latest round, 12,846 houses were specifically sanctioned under this vertical.
The committee also cleared three Demonstration Housing Projects in Chhattisgarh, Puducherry and Rajasthan, each comprising 40 dwelling units.
These projects are intended to showcase modern, cost-effective construction practices that can be replicated across the country.
A significant share of the new approvals has been directed towards women and vulnerable sections.
Of the 2.88 lakh houses sanctioned in this round, more than 1.60 lakh have been allotted to women, including widows, separated and unmarried women.
Eight dwelling units have been sanctioned for transgender beneficiaries.
In addition, 22,581 houses have been allotted to senior citizens, 35,525 for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 9,773 for Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries and 82,190 for Other Backward Classes.
Overall, of the 13.61 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 so far, 96 per cent are in the name of the female head of household or in joint ownership in BLC and Interest Subsidy Scheme ISS verticals, underscoring the scheme’s focus on women’s empowerment.
PMAY-U 2.0 builds on the earlier urban housing mission launched in 2015.
Across both phases, a total of 122.50 lakh houses have been sanctioned, with over 97 lakh pucca houses completed and delivered, marking one of the largest urban housing interventions undertaken in the country.
