India and Finland announced the creation of a Joint Task Force on 6G research to deepen cooperation in next-generation telecommunications, marking a key outcome of the Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s visit to India.
The initiative will bring together the Bharat 6G Alliance and Finland’s University of Oulu, two major institutions working on future mobile technologies, to collaborate on research, innovation, and standard-setting for sixth-generation wireless networks.
The move comes as India and Finland elevated their bilateral ties to a “Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability”, with emerging technologies such as 5G, 6G, quantum communications, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing identified as priority areas for cooperation.
Finland is widely considered one of the world’s early leaders in 6G research. The University of Oulu launched the world’s first organised 6G research programme in 2018 known as the 6G Flagship, which brings together academia, industry, and government to develop technologies expected to underpin wireless networks of the 2030s.
The programme involves hundreds of researchers and works closely with Finnish technology companies, particularly Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs, which are developing core technologies for next-generation mobile networks.
Finland has also played a central role in European 6G research initiatives, with Nokia leading major EU projects such as Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II aimed at defining the architecture and standards for future wireless systems.
India has launched its own Bharat 6G Mission, aiming to position the country among the leading developers of 6G technologies by 2030.
The Bharat 6G Alliance is an industry-led, government-facilitated initiative launched in July 2023 to spearhead India’s leadership in 6G technology, aiming for deployment by 2030. It brings together Indian startups, companies, academia, and researchers to develop indigenous IP, drive 6G standards, and promote “Atmanirbhar” (self-reliant) communications.
Collaboration with Finland is expected to strengthen joint research, accelerate technology development, and support cooperation between telecom companies, startups, and academic institutions in both countries as the global race for 6G technology intensifies.
