The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has started plantation, landscaping and beautification works at several major traffic junctions in the city as part of its plan to improve public spaces and strengthen urban greenery.

The works are being carried out at Mahavir Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk, Jharsa Chowk and Kanhai Chowk, which are among Gurugram’s busiest intersections and witness heavy vehicular movement through the day.

According to a statement by GMDA on Wednesday, 27 May, the initiative is aimed at improving the visual appeal of public spaces, increasing green cover and reducing the impact of air pollution and urban heat island effects at high-traffic locations.

As part of the drive, GMDA is carrying out large-scale plantation activities, converting earthen areas into green pockets, painting kerbstones, fencing green belts to prevent encroachments and undertaking other aesthetic improvement works.

The authority said these interventions are intended to create cleaner, cooler and more environmentally resilient public spaces at traffic-heavy junctions.

At Rajiv Chowk, intensive plantation and landscaping works are underway to strengthen the green cover and revive public spaces around the junction. Fencing is also being carried out to protect green islands from encroachment.

At Atul Kataria Chowk, plantation, pillar beautification and landscaping works are being undertaken to improve the junction’s appearance and expand green coverage.

At Mahavir Chowk, GMDA is planning to develop a Miyawaki forest to create a dense green ecosystem and improve the green profile of the area.

Similar beautification and greening works are also progressing at Jharsa Chowk and Kanhai Chowk.

GMDA has set a target to complete all junction improvement and beautification works by 15 June, ahead of the peak summer and monsoon season.

“Through these interventions, GMDA continues its efforts towards building a greener, cleaner and more sustainable Gurugram, with enhanced public spaces that contribute to environmental resilience and improved commuter experience,” said Amit Godara, Executive Engineer, GMDA.

Along with junction improvement works, GMDA is also strengthening green belts across the city.

Green belts along 45 Km of road length are being cleared of malba, excess soil and debris.

The authority said these green belts are being levelled and lowered so they can function as green drains and support improved storm water management during the monsoon season.
