State-owned GAIL (India) Limited is planning to set up a 178.2 MW greenfield wind power project in Maharashtra, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to diversify into clean energy.
The project was approved by GAIL’s Board of Directors at its meeting held on 27 February 2026, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The company will invest ₹1,736.25 crore in the wind project, which is expected to be implemented within 24 months from the award of the lump sum turnkey contract.
The project will be financed through a mix of debt and equity, according to the regulatory filing.

The planned addition will substantially expand GAIL’s renewable energy portfolio, adding to its existing installed wind capacity of 117.95 MW, which is currently operating at full capacity utilisation.
The company stated that the investment aligns with its broader business growth strategy.
The move also reflects its continued push into renewable energy sectors alongside its core natural gas operations.
Headquartered in New Delhi, GAIL (India) Limited is India’s leading natural gas company, with operations spanning gas transmission, trading, LNG, petrochemicals, city gas distribution, and energy infrastructure.
The company operates over 18,001 Km of natural gas pipelines across the country and holds more than 65 per cent market share in gas transmission and over 47 per cent share in gas trading.
GAIL is also expanding its presence in renewable energy, including solar, wind, and biofuels, as part of its long-term diversification strategy.
