The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹425 crore contract with Bharat Forge Limited for the acquisition of 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators for the Indian Navy.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on June 19 under the Buy Indian category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the generators will have a minimum 60 per cent indigenous content. The project is aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing capability in critical naval technologies and supporting the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
The ministry said the contract marks an important step towards establishing indigenous capability for manufacturing marine gas turbine generators in the country.
Marine gas turbine generators are used for power generation onboard modern naval combatants. They support critical combat systems, advanced weapons and sensor systems, making them an important part of a warship’s operational capability.
The acquisition is expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s operational readiness by ensuring indigenous production and end-to-end life-cycle support for the equipment.
The contract also adds to India’s efforts to build a stronger domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for strategically important naval systems.
