New Delhi, July 31: The Indian Army has introduced an indigenous Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel capable of operating at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius, a development expected to enhance the mobility, safety and operational readiness of combat and logistics vehicles deployed in high-altitude and snow-bound regions, the Ministry of Defence said on Friday. The fuel, developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), is also expected to benefit civilian users in severe winter regions.
The fuel addresses a longstanding operational challenge in extreme cold, where conventional diesel can thicken and clog fuel filters, affecting vehicle performance. According to the Ministry, XWG Diesel remains effective in temperatures as low as minus 42°C and is compliant with BS-VI emission standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications. It can be used across the Indian Army’s existing vehicle fleet without requiring engine modification or re-homologation.
The Army said the indigenous fuel was developed within a year through collaboration with Oil Marketing Companies, marking another step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence logistics. Besides improving operational reliability in extreme climatic conditions, the technology is expected to strengthen the Army’s ability to sustain mobility during high-altitude deployments and winter operations.
Launching the fuel in New Delhi, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth described XWG Diesel as “a game-changing indigenous innovation” that would enhance mobility, operational readiness and mission reliability across extreme climatic conditions. He said the fuel would eliminate practices previously required to keep vehicles operational during severe winters, improving both the safety and morale of personnel. The Army Chief also commended the Indian Army team and the Oil Marketing Companies for developing the solution within a year and expressed confidence that the collaboration would lead to more specialised fuels for diverse operational requirements.
Beyond military applications, the Ministry said the technology is expected to improve the reliability and safety of vehicles and equipment operating in high-altitude and extreme winter regions, extending the benefits of the indigenous innovation to civilian users while reinforcing India’s growing capability to develop specialised technologies for challenging environments.
