Aatmanirbhar push powers naval housing expansion under Project Seabird Phase IIA

The Ministry of Defence on Sunday 22 February announced the inauguration of new residential accommodation for senior sailors and defence civilians at Naval Base Karwar under Project Seabird Phase IIA.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, inaugurated the facilities on 21 February in the presence of Vice Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, Director General Seabird, and other senior officers.

The newly constructed accommodation at East of Manzil Creek and Amadalli comprises one tower of married accommodation for senior sailors with 60 Dwelling Units and four towers comprising 240 Dwelling Units for naval defence civilians.

The buildings have been constructed by Hyderabad-based NCC Ltd.

The infrastructure additions form part of the ongoing Phase IIA of Project Seabird, which is designed to support the berthing of a large number of ships and submarines at Karwar.

The phase also includes a Naval Air Station, a full-fledged Naval Dockyard, four Covered Dry Berths, and logistics infrastructure for ships and aircraft.

Upon completion, the project will accommodate approximately 10,000 uniformed and civilian personnel along with their families and is expected to significantly contribute to the local economy, industry and tourism.

The project conforms to the norms of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Indian Green Building Council.

On completion, it is expected to achieve IGBC Gold Rated Project status. Over 90 per cent of materials and equipment for the project have been sourced domestically, aligning with the concept of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
