New Delhi, October 17, 2026: The Central Government has approved 1,93,521 additional houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) across 11 states, with Uttar Pradesh receiving the largest allocation of 73,182 homes, followed by Bihar with 52,866. The latest approvals bring the total number of houses sanctioned under the scheme to approximately 20.80 lakh, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The approvals were granted during the 10th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), held in New Delhi on October 16 and chaired by Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development.

The newly approved houses are intended for eligible urban families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). They fall under two components of PMAY-U 2.0: Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP).

Apart from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Telangana received approval for 18,120 houses, followed by West Bengal with 16,559 and Gujarat with 14,290. Andhra Pradesh was allocated 6,560 houses, Chhattisgarh 4,670, Odisha 3,126, Karnataka 3,116, Mizoram 1,003 and Sikkim 29.

Launched in September 2024, PMAY-U 2.0 aims to provide housing assistance to one crore additional urban poor and middle-class families. The programme covers eligible EWS, Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) households, subject to their respective income limits and other eligibility conditions. The highest annual household income ceiling under the scheme is ₹9 lakh.

Financial assistance varies depending on the scheme component. Eligible households may receive assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh for housing, while the Interest Subsidy Scheme provides an interest subsidy of up to ₹1.80 lakh on eligible housing loans, subject to applicable conditions.

Under Beneficiary Led Construction, eligible families receive support to build houses on their own land. Affordable Housing in Partnership allows beneficiaries to purchase homes in eligible housing projects. The other two components cover affordable rental housing and interest subsidies on housing loans.

The ministry also highlighted women’s homeownership under PMAY-U 2.0. Of the approximately 20.80 lakh houses sanctioned so far, 20.16 lakh, or about 97%, have been allotted in women’s names or under joint ownership.

The cumulative sanctions also include 1.81 lakh houses for senior citizens, 3.61 lakh for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 1.06 lakh for Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries and 9.14 lakh for Other Backward Class beneficiaries.

During the meeting, officials were directed to strengthen project monitoring, address administrative delays and accelerate the completion and occupancy of approved houses. States were also asked to expedite the occupancy of completed homes under the earlier PMAY-U programme.

Under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 combined, the government has sanctioned more than 1.27 crore houses, of which 1.01 crore have been completed.

The latest approvals increase the number of houses sanctioned for eligible urban households, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, the ministry has not specified when the newly approved houses will be completed or handed over to beneficiaries. The figures represent housing approvals, not homes that have already been built or occupied.
