NEW DELHI, September 24: Indian Railways has approved a ₹166.5-crore four-lane Road Over Bridge at Alkapuri in Vadodara, a project aimed at easing a major traffic bottleneck and improving access to Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail station.
The ROB will be built in the Vadodara Division of Western Railway on a cost-sharing basis with the State Government. Indian Railways and the Gujarat Government will each contribute approximately ₹83.2769 crore to the project.
The new grade-separated road facility will augment the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge near Vadodara Railway Station, which serves as an important east-west connection between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas of the city.
The existing RUB has a vertical clearance of only about 3 metres, restricting the movement of larger vehicles. It is also affected by recurring waterlogging during the monsoon, contributing to congestion and inconvenience for road users.
The proposed four-lane ROB is expected to address these limitations by providing a higher-capacity crossing without disrupting railway operations.
The project will also strengthen connectivity to some of Vadodara’s key transport hubs, including Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail, or Bullet Train, station.
Traffic assessments show that the area currently handles more than 1,600 passenger car units per hour during peak periods. The corridor also has multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities.
Indian Railways said the existing RUB has become inadequate to meet current and projected traffic requirements.
Once developed, the four-lane ROB is expected to improve traffic movement around Vadodara Railway Station while providing a more effective east-west road connection across this busy part of the city.
