New Delhi, September 14: India’s wholesale price inflation rose to 9.92 per cent in August 2026 from 9.78 per cent in July, as inflation accelerated across food, fuel and power, and manufactured products.
Wholesale food inflation increased to 7.05 per cent in August from 6.65 per cent in the previous month, according to data released by the Office of the Economic Adviser under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
Inflation in manufactured products also edged higher to 8.37 per cent from 8.29 per cent in July.
The sharper increase came from the fuel and power segment, where inflation rose to 22.93 per cent in August from 20.05 per cent a month earlier.
Inflation in petroleum and natural gas stood at 34.41 per cent in August, compared with 26.99 per cent in July.
The August reading was also slightly above the 9.89 per cent median estimate in a Reuters poll of economists.
Headline wholesale inflation had eased marginally to 9.78 per cent in July from 9.87 per cent in June before rising again in August.
The government now compiles the Wholesale Price Index using 2022-23 as the base year, replacing the earlier 2011-12 series. The revised WPI series came into effect in June 2026.
Alongside the revised WPI, the government has also introduced an Output Producer Price Index and is publishing an Input Producer Price Index for manufacturing on a trial basis as part of a broader overhaul of producer-level price measurement.
