India’s industrial output grows 6.7% in July as manufacturing rises 7.3%, electricity and gas 8.7%

New Delhi: India’s industrial production grew 6.7 per cent year-on-year in July 2026, supported by higher output in manufacturing, electricity and gas supply, and other major industrial sectors, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 124.8 in July 2026, compared with 117.0 in July 2025. Manufacturing, which has the largest weight in the index, recorded growth of 7.3 per cent during the month.

Electricity and gas supply expanded 8.7 per cent, while water supply, sewerage and waste management grew 7.4 per cent. Mining and quarrying contracted 0.9 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year.

Within manufacturing, 19 of the 23 industry groups covered under the National Industrial Classification recorded positive growth in July.

Electrical equipment manufacturing registered growth of 28.3 per cent, while production of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers increased 22.2 per cent. Machinery and equipment manufacturing grew 12.1 per cent.

Among motor vehicles, auto components, spares and accessories, passenger cars and commercial vehicles were among the products that contributed significantly to the increase in production.

Growth in electrical equipment was supported by products including switchgear, circuit breakers, control and meter panels, UPS systems, solid-state drives and connectors used for optical fibres and cables.

Construction machinery and equipment, including bulldozers and road rollers, as well as pumps and turbines, were among the products contributing to growth in the machinery and equipment segment.

Under the Use-Based Classification, capital goods output grew 16.1 per cent in July, while intermediate goods increased 10.0 per cent. Infrastructure and construction goods recorded growth of 6.9 per cent.

Consumer durables grew 10.5 per cent and primary goods increased 4.1 per cent. Consumer non-durables were the only use-based category to record a decline, contracting 1.0 per cent year-on-year.

For the April-July 2026 period, overall industrial production grew 6.3 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. Manufacturing expanded 7.0 per cent during the four-month period, while electricity and gas supply grew 8.7 per cent.

Mining and quarrying contracted 1.1 per cent during April-July, while water supply, sewerage and waste management recorded growth of 6.3 per cent.

The July figures are based on the new IIP series with 2022-23 as the base year and use the NIC-2025 industrial classification.
