New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has completed more than 2 crore Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBUs) for schoolchildren through a nationwide drive covering over 1.56 lakh schools across the country.
The special campaign, launched in September 2025, is being carried out in coordination with State and Union Territory education departments to help children complete mandatory Aadhaar biometric updates through camps organised at schools.
UIDAI has integrated its system with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), enabling authorities to identify students whose mandatory biometric updates are pending and organise targeted outreach at the school level.
For children enrolled in Aadhaar below the age of five, demographic details and a photograph are recorded, while fingerprints and iris biometrics are not captured because these biometric characteristics are still developing.
Children are required to undergo a Mandatory Biometric Update after attaining the age of five and again after turning 15 to update their fingerprints, iris and photograph in Aadhaar records.
UIDAI has also waived the MBU fee for children in the 7-15 years age group from October 1, 2025, for one year. Mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5-7 years and 15-17 years are already free under the applicable provisions.
As a result, Mandatory Biometric Update is currently free for children between 5 and 17 years of age until September 30, 2026.
UIDAI has urged parents and guardians to ensure that children complete the biometric update within the prescribed age window. The authority said failure to complete the update may lead to difficulties in Aadhaar authentication while accessing benefits under government schemes or registering for competitive and university entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE and CUET.
The school-based drive is aimed at making Aadhaar biometric update services more accessible and convenient by taking the facility directly to students at their schools.
