Delhi-NCR pollution watchdog CAQM conducts 173 inspections in 17 days, detects 62 violations across sectors

The 134th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and Adjoining Areas reviewed enforcement actions, inspections and compliance status across the National Capital Region on 6 July.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Commission’s flying squads conducted 173 inspections between 14 June and 30 June.

Of these, 15 inspections were conducted at construction and demolition sites, 91 in the industrial sector and 67 related to diesel generator sets.

The inspections reported 62 violations, including seven at construction and demolition sites, 31 in the industrial sector and 24 related to diesel generator sets.

Based on the inspection reports, closure of four units or projects has been proposed.

The statement said sealing of 27 diesel generator sets, issuance of six compliance orders or directions and imposition of Environmental Compensation in 17 cases have also been proposed.

The Enforcement Task Force also reviewed action taken after its 133rd meeting.

The ETF noted that all actionable cases related to the industrial sector, construction and demolition sites and diesel generator sets have been acted upon by the concerned agencies.

Seven resumption orders related to construction and demolition sites have been issued after compliance verification. These include two in Uttar Pradesh and five in Haryana.

The task force also reviewed the cumulative enforcement status as on 6 July.

The ETF noted that the Commission’s flying squads have inspected 27,750 units, projects and entities so far.

Based on these inspections, 1,802 closure directions have been issued. Of these, 1,424 resumption orders have been issued after verification of compliance.

Another 123 cases have been transferred to the respective State Pollution Control Boards or the Delhi Pollution Control Committee for final decision.

A further 255 entities remain under examination for issuance of resumption orders.

The Commission reiterated the need for stronger enforcement, timely compliance verification, improved coordination among implementing agencies and strict adherence to air pollution control norms across NCR.

It also emphasised better inspection efficiency, accountability and faster enforcement action in priority sectors, including industrial emissions, diesel generator sets and construction and demolition activities.
