The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has removed 150 unauthorised residential and commercial structures at Amar Nagar, Khindipada in Mulund to clear obstructions in the construction of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project.

The action was carried out to facilitate the execution of the key road project, which is being developed to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.

The civic body said the demolished structures were among the encroachments affecting the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road alignment.

Another 234 unauthorised structures are scheduled to be removed this week.

The demolition drive was carried out by BMC’s T Ward Encroachment Removal Squad under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner, Zone 6, and under the leadership of T Ward Assistant Commissioner Yogita Kolhe, according to a Mumbai civic body statement issued on 31 May.

The operation involved 10 municipal engineers, 100 municipal staff members, two Poclain excavators, four JCB machines and 10 dumpers.

A contingent of 50 police personnel was deployed to maintain law and order during the drive. The police deployment was led by Senior Police Inspector Ajay Joshi of Mulund Police Station.

The action forms part of BMC’s ongoing efforts to facilitate timely execution of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, which is being developed as a major east-west connectivity corridor for Mumbai.

The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project is a ₹14,000 crore corridor being implemented by BMC.

The 12.2 Km corridor will include underground tunnels, bridges and key traffic interchanges to connect Goregaon in the western suburbs with Mulund in the eastern suburbs.

Once completed, the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is expected to reduce travel time between the western and eastern suburbs and provide faster cross-city connectivity.
