Tripura has committed to converting government power consumers and establishments to prepaid metering by August 2026 and completing pending smart meter works by July 2027, after a review meeting chaired by Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal in Agartala on Sunday, 31 May.
The meeting reviewed power sector and urban development schemes in the state, with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, state Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, senior state government officials, officials from the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and power sector CPSEs in attendance.
During the review, Manohar Lal discussed key areas where the state power department and state power sector PSUs could work with a detailed action plan.
Matters linked to the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme and the operational and financial parameters of the state DISCOM were also taken up.
The Union minister emphasised the need to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses and improve the financial performance of DISCOMs.
He also underlined the need to improve revenue collection, with a specific focus on prepaid conversion of meters installed for government consumers and establishments.
The progress of smart metering in Tripura was reviewed, and the state was advised to speed up implementation.
As per the Ministry of Power statement, Tripura committed to converting government consumers to prepaid metering by August 2026 and completing pending smart meter works by July 2027.
The meeting also reviewed resource adequacy and intra-state transmission planning to meet rising demand.
The state was advised to ensure that transmission capacity addition keeps pace with demand growth.
Tripura committed to expeditious augmentation of intra-state transmission infrastructure and adoption as per the resource adequacy plan.
Progress under PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was also reviewed.
The state was advised to use these schemes to expand clean energy access, including in remote and underserved areas.
Tripura has committed to installing rooftop solar for 2 lakh consumers by March 2027.
The ministry said this would also help reduce the cost of electricity for these consumers.
Manohar Lal said sincere efforts would help make the state DISCOM financially viable and the state power sector self-sufficient. He also assured continued support and cooperation from the Government of India for the overall development of Tripura.
Chief Minister Manik Saha assured that the state would take all necessary measures for speedy implementation of sanctioned works and for improving the overall performance of the power sector.
