The government has notified two new Special Economic Zones in Puducherry after approval from the Board of Approval for SEZs under the Department of Commerce, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on Friday.

The proposals were approved during the 137th meeting of the Board of Approval held on 27 February 2026, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The two SEZs are expected to bring a combined proposed investment of ₹1,975 crore and generate 8,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in Puducherry.

Of the two projects, one IT/ITES SEZ will be developed by Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk.

The ministry said this will be the first SEZ in India to be developed by an Urban Local Body, namely a municipality.

The IT/ITES SEZ will come up over 8.6230 hectares, with a proposed investment of ₹725 crore and proposed employment of 3,500 direct and indirect jobs.

The second project is a multi-sector SEZ to be developed by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk.

The multi-sector SEZ will cover 86.2457 hectares, with proposed investment of ₹1,250 crore and proposed employment of 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The ministry said the projects mark a step towards strengthening the country’s industrial base, expanding exports and deepening self-reliance in strategic sectors.

It said the approvals are a major milestone for Puducherry’s industrial and export-led growth strategy and are expected to expand opportunities for investment, manufacturing and high-quality employment.

The ministry added that the projects reflect growing industrial momentum across the Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Puducherry region, where diversified sectors and large-scale projects are contributing to employment generation and regional economic development.

According to the government, the SEZ notifications are part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s industrial, technology, manufacturing and services ecosystem through diversified SEZ-led growth.
