India has achieved its highest-ever annual addition in power generation capacity, with 64,895 MW commissioned in a single year in the finacial year 2025-26, according to a statement issued by the office of Power Minister Manohar Lal.

The addition surpasses the previous record of 34,054 MW achieved in FY 2024-25, marking a significant jump in capacity expansion.

Of the total capacity added, 52,095 MW comes from renewable energy sources, indicating a substantial tilt towards clean energy in India’s power mix.

“India has achieved a historic milestone in the power sector by commissioning 64,895 MW of generation capacity in a single year, the highest ever, surpassing the previous record of 34,054 MW in FY 2024-25,” Manohar Lal’s office said in a statement on X on 13 April.

The development reflects the country’s continued focus on expanding generation capacity while accelerating its transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems.

“Notably, 52,095 MW of this addition comes from renewable energy sources, reflecting a strong shift towards clean energy,” the statement said.

The minister’s office stated that the achievement aligns with India’s broader push to strengthen energy security and scale up clean power infrastructure.

“Under the leadership of the Hon’ble PM, Shri Narendra Modi, the sector has witnessed unprecedented growth, reinforcing India’s commitment to expanding generation capacity, accelerating the transition to sustainable energy, and emerging as a global leader in clean power,” the statement added.
