The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, 10 March, approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu as an international airport, a move aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and supporting tourism, trade, and economic activity in the southern part of the state.
Madurai Airport, located in the historic temple city of Madurai, is among the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu and serves as a key aviation gateway for state’s southern districts.
By granting it international status, the government seeks to expand its role in connecting the region with overseas destinations while supporting the movement of pilgrims, tourists, and business travellers.
According to the official government release, elevating Madurai Airport to International Status would enhance regional connectivity, promote trade, and drive economic development in the region.
The government noted that the airport’s potential to attract international pilgrims and businesses aligns with the city’s historical prominence.
The decision comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, 11 March.
During his Tamil Nadu visit, PM Modi will inaugurate, dedicate to the nation, lay the foundation stone and flag off multiple development projects worth around ₹5,650 crore in Tiruchirappalli.
The projects cover key sectors including petroleum and natural gas infrastructure, lubricants manufacturing, rural connectivity, highway development and railway services.
