The foundation stone has been laid for the development of a new greenfield airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan, a project expected to significantly expand aviation connectivity for the city of Kota, widely known as India’s largest coaching and education hub.

Planned at an estimated cost of ₹1,507 crore, the airport is intended to support growing travel demand from students, businesses and industries in the region while strengthening air links between Kota and major cities across the country.

The project will include construction of a 20,000 square metre terminal building designed to handle 1,000 peak hour passengers with an annual capacity of 2 million passengers per annum. Airside infrastructure will feature a 3,200 m × 45 m runway (Runway 11/29) capable of supporting operations of A321-type aircraft, along with an apron designed to accommodate seven Code C aircraft such as A321 or B737.

Other facilities planned under the project include two link taxiways, an Air Traffic Control cum technical block, a fire station, parking facilities and other supporting infrastructure required for modern airport operations.

The passenger terminal is expected to include 14 check-in counters, five X-ray baggage inspection systems, two baggage belts and three passenger boarding bridges, enabling faster passenger movement and improved airport processing capacity.

Kota currently has an existing airport operated by the Airports Authority of India, but its infrastructure is limited. The present facility has a runway measuring 1,220 metres suitable only for smaller aircraft such as the DO-228 and a terminal capable of handling about 50 passengers during peak hours, which restricts the possibility of commercial flight operations. Urban development around the site has also limited expansion possibilities.

The new greenfield airport is therefore expected to address these limitations and create a modern aviation gateway for Kota, supporting future passenger traffic growth while improving connectivity for the city’s education and industrial sectors.
