Union Minister for Development of North-Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the ₹450 crore Matabari Tourism Circuit at Dumbur Lake in Tripura, marking a key step in the state’s tourism-led development push.

The project, located at Narkel Kunja near Dumbur Lake, aims to link the Tripura Sundari Temple, Chabimura and Dumbur Lake into an integrated tourism circuit combining spiritual, cultural and eco-tourism elements. Of the total project cost, ₹276 crore is being contributed by the Ministry of Development of North-East Region.

The Matabari Tourism Circuit is expected to generate between 4,000 and 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, with around 30 per cent participation by women. Self-help groups and local youth are planned to be integrated into tourism-related activities, alongside initiatives focused on skill development, including training of tour guides.

The project will include floating jetties, eco-friendly resorts, modern tourist facilities and immersive experiences rooted in local culture, aimed at giving the Dumbur region a distinct tourism identity.

During his three-day visit to Tripura, the Union Minister announced development projects worth a total of ₹750 crore. On the first day, projects valued at ₹220 crore across sectors such as roads, healthcare, education and solar micro-grids were inaugurated or had foundation stones laid. On the second day, an ₹80 crore agarwood value chain project was launched to enhance farmers’ incomes and enable direct linkage with international markets.

The visit also highlighted initiatives to strengthen the Northeast’s green economy, with 22 projects approved to promote engineered bamboo under the Green Gold programme, aimed at environmentally sustainable development.

The Matabari Tourism Circuit and allied projects form part of broader efforts to position Tripura as a key destination for tourism, while expanding livelihood opportunities and infrastructure across the state.
