Kerala’s long-distance rail connectivity received a significant upgrade on Thursday (23 January) with the flagging off of three new Amrit Bharat Express trains, expanding affordable and time-bound travel options from the state to multiple regions across southern India.
The newly introduced services include the Nagercoil-Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express, Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express, and Thiruvananthapuram–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, strengthening rail links between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
The Amrit Bharat Express category is designed to provide improved passenger amenities while keeping fares affordable, particularly for long-distance travellers. These trains are expected to benefit daily commuters, migrant workers, students, and budget-conscious passengers seeking reliable inter-state connectivity.
According to a PMO release, the addition of these services will also support tourism, trade, education, and employment movement across southern India by improving travel efficiency and reducing journey times between key urban and regional centres.
With the launch of these three Amrit Bharat Express trains, Kerala’s rail network gains enhanced integration with neighbouring states, marking another expansion in India’s push to modernise and broaden its passenger rail services.
